That is, by far, the best and only reward system for youths that I’ve executed.  I first wrote this publish (and shared it) years in the past, nevertheless it’s nonetheless my favourite reward system.

As an elementary trainer and mother of 4, I attempted many reward techniques, however that is the one which works. Listed below are some non-toy and non-candy rewards that we like, too.

This publish comprises affiliate hyperlinks to merchandise that I like!

I had marbles, stickers, charts…  after which I attempted Cotton Balls in our own residence!  This labored nice, and I’ve used them for a few years. We began it when our children have been all very younger, and it has by no means failed us.

We have four kids, and this has labored with all of them. I’ve not needed to stray from this straightforward reward system and it by no means fails me.

    FOCUS ON THE POSITIVE.

It units a give attention to the optimistic issues that your kids do. That’s why I adore it a lot. Even their pals have tried to earn cotton balls to take house.  haha!

What’s the Objective of the Reward System Jars?

Replenish your jar with cotton balls.  Simple sufficient, proper?

What Reward Do We Give When They Attain the Objective?

Their alternative (inside motive) – NOT AN OBJECT or cash! They’ve their alternative of DOING one thing enjoyable… form of just like the actions that we do on our “one on one time” evenings.

Some concepts that our children have executed previously: Bowling with Dad, Films with Mother, Movie Night with pizza and popcorn on the screened-in porch with the household, having a cousin spend the evening, swimming at evening, staying up late to observe a film with mother and pop, and so on…

    How is it arrange?

    • Every of our children has a jar.
    • Every jar has a rubber band on it, which serves as a “fill line. “
    • The older the kid, the upper the rubber band (as an older youngster, it takes extra cotton balls to achieve the fill line, which is when the reward occurs.)
    • As they become older (every year), the rubber band strikes larger up (with their elevated age comes larger expectations), till round six years outdated, after I take away the rubber band fully they usually merely need to fill the jar.

You may make them as I did with the rubber band, or you might use chalkboard paint in your jar & draw on the fill line with chalk in order that it’s simply moveable as they become older.

    How does it work?

    • It takes the children about two weeks to a month to replenish the cotton ball jar as a result of it’s a particular factor and isn’t given for each little factor that they do.
    • Though at first, it would be best to make it replenish a bit of faster in order that they’re able to get their first reward and perceive it.  As soon as they do that, they’ll see what they’re working in direction of.
    • Remind them when that first reward comes “It is because you crammed up your cotton balls!  I’m so glad that you simply did as a result of that is a lot enjoyable!”
    • Typically I’ll use cotton balls as an incentive: “When you ____, you’ll earn an additional cotton ball right now.”  (Works nice for this, however I don’t do that too actually because I don’t need it to lose its actual function.)
    • I don’t usually give them out for doing their chores (see age-appropriate chore list here).
These cotton balls are particular and are available after they do one thing that was NOT requested of them.  Typically, they’ll ask, “Can I’ve a cotton ball for that?”  I choose that reply based mostly on the state of affairs.  For probably the most half, asking for one doesn’t get you one.

How Do They Earn Cotton Balls?

    • They earn one by doing one thing good and surprising.
    • A couple of examples embrace:
      • If one youngster spills their meals/drink and the opposite helps to scrub it up (with out being requested!)
      • If I would like one thing from downstairs, they provide to get it for me (with out being requested)
      • If I catch them doing one thing or SAYING one thing sort to one another or to another person.
      • If they assist somebody (with out being requested).

    It’s straightforward and efficient.
It has not let me down but.

When they’re in direction of the tip (with about 5 cotton balls to earn earlier than reaching the fill line), they are going to be REALLY attempting arduous!

An instance of what I imply…

A couple of years in the past, two of our children had lower than two cotton balls to go of their jars earlier than they have been crammed … they have been doing the whole lot to earn them: cleansing their room, getting their brother and sister’s pajamas prepared, telling one another how nice they have been, providing compliments to everybody within the household.
It’s so enjoyable to observe them work in direction of the “end line.”  It labored, they usually went bowling the subsequent day.

What Occurs After They Have Crammed the Jar?

Once they have earned their reward, I empty the cotton balls from their jars and put them of their ziplock bag and again into the drawer within the kitchen proper underneath the place I maintain the jars.

I maintain the jars on my counter, subsequent to my refrigerator.  It’s not the prettiest placement, however it’s just about hidden within the nook of the counter closest to the fridge, besides that the children can see it each time that they’re within the kitchen and they’re able to maintain observe of it.

Do You Take Cotton Balls Away

    • No… however Sure.  I very RARELY take them away.  In all the years of doing this, I can solely keep in mind a couple of times after they misplaced a cotton ball. (For instance, when their conduct may be very uncalled for, like being impolite or speaking again.)It is a large deal, and they’re very upset about it. They work additional arduous to ‘earn it again’, which will also be executed.
    • I would like this jar to be for optimistic issues (rewarding), not for a punishment. Taking the cotton balls away makes it a punishment jar, not a reward jar. Hold the give attention to the optimistic.
    • TAKE NOTE: When you begin taking them away usually, you’ll lose the ‘energy’ that this has as a result of it’ll take them too lengthy to get their aim.
    • I don’t give out cash or toys for doing nicely and filling their jar. I would like it to be one thing particular with “somebody” (high quality time) as a substitute of “one thing.”

    COTTON BALL JAR SYSTEM SUMMARY:

    • DO SOMETHING NICE–>> GET A COTTON BALL.
    • FILL YOUR JAR->> DO SOMETHING SPECIAL WITH SOMEONE SPECIAL (or actually have a sleepover at their grandparents’ or cousin’s home).

How do I make the precise jars?

Here are directions to make these DIY reward Jars (I made mine from Marinara Sauce Jars)
